ON PREPARATION
Memorable portraits take careful planning and the clothing is very important to its success. You don't want to appear in plaids, stripes, and checks, white or bright colors. The basic rule is to keep the face prominent. Another rule is light clothing for a lighter backgrounds and dark clothing for darker backgrounds.
Turtlenecks or V-necks are flattering provided that neither is exaggerated in style. Avoid those that completely hide the neck.
On close-ups, long sleeves are essential except for kids. Exposed arms will overpower the face.
Woman, photographed with legs showing, should wear something long or a pair of dark stockings to keep the attention on the face. Also, if shoes are to show have them blend with the attire.
Men should be clean shaven or facial hair carefully groomed, with their hair cut about a week prior.
Whenever women are happiest with their hair is when they should be photographed.
CLOTHING FOR INDIVIDUALS
The main purpose of a portrait is to direct the attention to the face with all other elements secondary. Medium to dark tones of grey, burgundy, blue, brown or green are best when against a medium or dark background.
CLOTHING FOR SMALL GROUPS
Couples and small groups should choose garments within the same tonal range. When dressed in light and dark tones together the lighter colors will seem to come forward as the darker ones recede. The person with the lighter color will appear heavier as well.
CLOTHING FOR FAMILIES
Family groupings usually hang on a wall. It looks better if everyone not only coordinate the colors of clothing but also to that of the room where the portrait will hang.
OUTDOOR SETTINGS
The same rules apply as those above except medium shades within the same tonal range are better for outdoor environments.
